Swollen and very infected right foot. Photo taken September 24, 2006

When we visited Rochester for the second time in September, 2006, we spotted this juvenile goose limping painfully within the flock. A close inspection of his right foot revealed that a fishing line was entangled around it, possibly choking off circulation. We could see the end of the fishing line protruding from the wound.

However, he seemed to be doing better two days later, moving about with less pain. We hoped he would somehow recover.

We visited the park a couple more times but he wasn't at the parking lot. We assumed he could fly and that he probably flew out with his family.

His foot fell off and he is unable to support his body with his left foot, which appears to be lame. December 19, 2006

When we visited Rochester again in December, we noticed this goose hobbling about the parking lot, using his wings to balance his body. His right foot was missing at about the knee joint so it was just a stub and he was dragging this stub wherever he went. We compared his photos with the photos of the goose with the swollen foot in September and positively identified the two as one and the same.

Sometime between October and December, his very badly infected foot had fallen off and he had also injured his left foot.

Usually, geese are able to fly with just one good foot but this sad little goose could not fly because his left foot was weak or lame. He was also destroying his wings by balancing on them to get about. Watching him crawl about using his wings was heart wrenching.

Even though we knew he would more than likely be euthanized if taken to a wildlife rehabilitator, we contacted the Department of Natural Resources to find out if someone could capture him.
We contacted a veterinarian's office and they suggested contacting Quarry Hill Nature Center, who suggested calling Animal Control. Animal Control said they'd seen him at the park but DNR preferred us to leave the geese alone and allow nature to take its course.

As we were leaving Rochester the next day, there was really nothing more we could do for this sad little goose. We left him large piles of corn, hoping they'd help him for a short time and we decided to name him Sayre because his sweet little call reminded us of the call of a toy Canada goose that we'd purchased in the little town of Sayre, Oklahoma.

Alarming proposals are in the works for Silver Lake. Juan and many other crippled geese will be detrimentally affected if these proposals take place. Please CLICK HERE for our updated article about Silver Lake. We need your help to contact the agencies involved in this distressing situation.
